Complementary/Alternative Medicine (CAM) – essential medicine?
What is alternative about eating whole healthy foods, taking natural herbs and teas, bathing in natural mineral healing waters, getting a massage or taking an “emotional” holiday to reduce stress? Yet, mainstream medicine has us convinced that taking a prescription drug is primary medicine, or having surgery is primary before supporting and encouraging the body’s own healing process.
This idea is backward. Primarily the body is a natural healing organism. It is not alternative to eat densely nutritious food, to drink healing herbal teas that support immunity, sleep and relaxation. Essential is keeping healthy first and using drugs and/or surgery as an alternative when the healthy options have not worked.
Doctors (MD’s) learn in contemporary medical school to fix what is broken or diseased. They have neither training nor knowledge of how to keep people strong, vital or healthy.
Hence they only see disease vs. no disease. They lack training in the steps toward health and maintenance of a healthy life.
People are slowly awakening and it’s time to reverse the naming of what is “alternative” in medicine. Naturopathic Medicine is essential care and is medicine that restores and maintains health. What we need is a grass roots campaign to change the cultural belief that wholesome, health restoring medicine (called CAM) such as massage, acupuncture, nutrition, chiropractic, and naturopathic medicines is essential.
We need to call CAM the essential primary medicine, not the other way around. Think about it….
